Electronic Theatre ImageUK videogames specialist retailer GAME recently revealed research conducted among 2,000 gamers into the best year in the industry’s history. Along with electing 1996 – the year of Tomb Raider’s debut and the launch of the Nintendo 64 console – as the best year for gaming, the poll offered opinions on the ‘best console of all time.’

The Nintendo Wii (15%) topped the poll as the best ever home gaming device ahead of the PlayStation 3 (9%) and Xbox 360 (10%) in a field of twenty five different systems, including consoles and PCs such as the ZX Spectrum and Atari 2600. This result will surely come as a surprise to many, as the Wii is considered to be a console which abandoned Nintendo’s roots and offered new experiences not to their core fanbase, but to the Electronic Theatre Imagethen newly established casual gamer demographic. Another shock is that of just how low the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) ranked; a console which is commonly considered to have established the foundations upon which many modern videogames genres have been built.
