The forthcoming Valiant Hearts: The Great War is an unusual title to bring to consoles, showing the maturity of modern digital distribution channels. It’s such a change from the norm in fact that even the team behind the videogame was surprised by how little resistance they faced from the upper echelons at Ubisoft. This is a videogame that deserves to be made, and it seems that the money men agree for once.

“At Ubisoft we are extremely lucky.” States Adrian Lacey, IP development director for Ubisoft Studio France. “Our boss – our big boss – gives us the liberty to try new things. I was surprised: I did expect more resistance than we actually got. I think Paul [Tumelaire]’s art work and the creative visionary that works here opened it up straight away.”

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a unique take on the drama of World War I, depicting a series of characters with individual storylines and a singular common denominator. The stories of each are not yet known, but Lacey is confident that gamers will understand what Valiant Hearts: The Great War is about without this having to be spelt out for them.

“People understood it; people understood where it was going and I think that was a huge help. I think internally people were just like ‘wow, it’s interesting – emotionally – it’s really adding value to games and it’s really giving a unique experience.’”

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is set to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2014, and Electronic Theatre will bring you much more on the videogame in the near future.
