Ubisoft’s Valiant Hearts: The Great War is proving to be an appealing proposition for many different videogame audiences around the world, but pinning down the exact reasons for this would never be easy. The setting, the art style or simply the fact that it’s different? All of the above, according to Adrian Lacey, IP development director for Ubisoft Studio France.

“The styling has opened up different things where traditional, say a core shooter, may not be as appealing towards women or older people. Here it’s actually; we are seeing it actually appeals to a very wide audience.” Offers Lacey when discussing the nature of Valiant Hearts: The Great War as a digital-only release. “It also allows us to explore ways to communicate with people and bring new horizons to games.”

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is solidly based around it’s characters as opposed to the heroism and violence of war, with passion and inner strength being the themes placed ahead of fighting for your country. With this in mind, there’s a bond that needs to be developed with each character in a far greater fashion than any faceless first-person shooter.

“It’s not the number of polygons that make you laugh or cry. And I think we’ve proven that with Valiant Hearts.” States Lacey. “I love a super realistic game, I can’t deny it, but I think you can also have the other way. It’s like a book or movies it doesn’t always have to be that AAA blockbuster to give you an emotional attachment.”

Currently in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Valiant Hearts: The Great War is set for release in 2014. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Valiant Hearts: The Great War and other forthcoming titles from Ubisoft.
