Electronic Theatre ImageThe forthcoming Watch_Dogs is set to receive a multiplayer mode alongside the highly anticipated single-player campaign, however it’s delivering a change-of-pace to the standard peer-to-peer online service. Utilising a free companion app, Watch_Dogs will allow gamers on a smartphone or tablet to compete against their friends at home, and Ubisoft assure that the ctOS Mobile app has been built from the ground-up to make this a seamless experience.

“We know that latency is something that we can not fight.” States Phillip Baude, the lead game designer for the ctOS Mobile companion app for Watch_Dogs. “We know that that will happen anyway, we’ve Electronic Theatre Imagehad several years of knowledge rebooting things like this. So the whole design has been done with this delay in mind.”

Baude spoke openly about the technical limitations faced when developing the ctOS Mobile companion app, knowing from the very start that creating an interpretation of Watch_Dogs’ 3D world on tablet or smartphone would be challenging and instead opting for something more suited to the devices.

“We knew that from the beginning having a similar experience on the tablet or on the phone was the wrong idea. And also offering a similar experience is not the way we should design stuff when we Electronic Theatre Imagedesign on different platforms. We need to find a way to connect them together and we found that as soon as people are aware of the gameplay it was way much more interesting than trying to simulate exactly the way it is on Watch_Dogs on consoles.”

The ctOS Mobile app will launch alongside the Watch_Dogs videogame this winter. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Watch_Dogs, including a full transcript of the interview with Phillip Baude and a hands-on preview of the ctOS Mobile app coming soon.
