Electronic Theatre ImageTablets have been a successful addition to the technology market and have transformed the way people are able to browse the internet, play videogames and carry out simple tasks such as reading a book or watching a programme. Tablets are often perceived to be overgrown smartphones as many of the features are similar, yet the popularity of a smartphone has not reduced the number of tablets that have been sold and used by millions of people, 30% of households own at least one tablet device.

Laptops have been influenced by the success of the tablet and tablet laptops have combined the benefits and features of two leading items of technology to create the perfect device. Tablets, as with most forms of technology, are continually growing and improving with the introduction of superior technology and the latest addition to the ordinary tablet is Eye Tracking technology.

Eye Tracking: The Purpose

Tablets are more of a fun device that fulfils a great deal of entertainment purposes and is used by people of all ages to carry out a range of activities. The purpose of the eye tracking technology is to allow a hand free experience whilst using the tablet to improve the time spent using the item and make it easier to use. Users view 70% more Internet pages on a tablet as opposed to a smartphone and there is therefore a greater need to have technology that will allow this process to be easier and more relaxed.

Eye Tracking: How it Works

The technology has been named ‘Eyemobile’ and consists of two infrared cameras that are able to locate a user’s eye position and allow them the power to turn pages, begin new searches and browse the Internet faster and easier with technology that takes less physical interaction.

Eye Tracking: Where it is Found

So far, the technology is only found in the Windows Surface Tablet or any Windows 8 Tablet through the USB port. Dell tablets are hoping to include the technology within the next few months but are currently trialling the technology and the way in which it will work with existing Dell tablets.  Eventually, all tablets will have ‘Eyemobile’ or a version of which carries out similar tasks and has similar features.

Eye tracking is allowing technological devices to be more available to everyone, especially those with disabilities. Some people are simply unable to use items such as tablets and smartphones as they do not have the capabilities of using the touch screen. Eye tracking within these devices means that a simple flick of the eyes can turn the pages, begin searches and an overall interaction with modern technology.

By 2015, 2.5 billion people will own a table or a smartphone and the technology will continually evolve, as is true will all devices. The latest technology will dramatically change the tablet and the people that are able to use it and is a sign of the advancements that are due in the future.
