Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Butterfly

29 April, 2012
By

Electronic Theatre ImageAn understated Windows Phone 7 exclusive release, Butterfly is another of Microsoft Studios’ Xbox LIVE enabled titles that defy genre classification. The generic ‘action’ label doesn’t really fit, but Butterfly clearly isn’t a puzzle videogame. What it most definitely is however, is a relaxing interactive entertainment challenge.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Bug Village

Glu Mobile has a reputation of delivering hit-and-miss products. Some of their titles have defined what it is that makes mobile gaming a compelling alternative to handheld and home console products, whereas others are misjudged ragtag production cynically designed to micro-manage a player’s disposable income. The recently released Windows Phone 7 version of Bug Village falls into the latter camp.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Collapse

For a mobile gaming platform the Windows Phone 7’s Xbox LIVE enabled catalogue seems rather light on puzzle titles. One of the staples of gaming-on-the-go since the Game Boy rendition of the ever-popular Tetris (which also has a version available on the mobile format), the ratio of puzzle videogames in relation to action titles, arcade classics and dexterity challenges is somewhat offset on Windows Phone 7. But of course, with there being such little competition it gives Collapse a greater opportunity to make an impression.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Minesweeper

6 November, 2011
By

Electronic Theatre ImageMinesweeper?” I hear you ask. “Minesweeper? The 1981 game that has been recreated, in one form or another, on just about every format with a CPU?” Yes, that exact same Minesweeper, as it is now in it’s availability on Windows Phone 7. Diverting very little from the tradition Minesweeper template – though divert it does – Minesweeper for Windows Phone 7 isn’t as enticing a prospect as many of the other titles available for the format, however as a free download featuring extensive Xbox LIVE functionality, it’s certainly an interesting prospect.

Launched as part of the recent ‘Must Have Games’ campaign, geoDefense is another successful mobile game brought to the Windows Phone 7 catalogue by Microsoft Game Studios and modified specifically for the format. geoDefense is a Tower Defence game developed by Critical Thought Games specifically for touchscreen devices, and featuring a stylish neon vector visual design.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Fruit Ninja

5 June, 2011

Halfbrick’s Fruit Ninja is one of those games that transcends market boundaries. Eminently casual in design by somehow retaining that one-more-go high score challenge appeal that sees the 8-bit era classics remain so appealing. Sitting alongside the likes of Angry Birds and Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja could be considered a hero of the smartphone gaming revolution.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Super Monkey Ball

The Windows Phone 7 version of Super Monkey Ball is the latest in a long line of adaptations of the original GameCube classic. Innovative and inspiring at the time of its release, few titles offered under the franchise’s banner have since managed to live-up to the standard set by the very first release. Hopes are high that SEGA will be able to recreate the magic on a modern system, but given the disappointing response to the iPhone releases, you’d be forgiven for not expecting great things from the Windows Phone 7 release.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Fable: Coin Golf

Despite the efforts by other publishers to bring their most popular franchises to Windows Phone 7, the format holder seems fairly reluctant to follow suit. Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst arrived shortly after launch and a mobile version of Halo: Waypoint fell short of offering any kind of actual gameplay, but aside from this Microsoft Game Studios has concentrated mainly on new intellectual properties (IPs) and dual-format compatible releases, such as the recently launched Full House Poker. You might think that Fable: Coin Golf is set to kick-off a new campaign of well known franchises making their way to Windows Phone 7, but from the looks of their schedule, it seems likely that it will remain a slight offering for some time.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Parachute Panic HD

27 March, 2011

Electronic Theatre Image

The Window Phone 7’s Xbox LIVE enabled catalogue is becoming a home to more-and-more casual gaming timesinks, from puzzle games to brain training titles, revisions of arcade classics from yesteryear to more modern, original ideas. Parachute Panic HD is one of the lattermost titles, casual enough to be picked-up by anyone but addictive enough to swallow hours-on-end thanks an inspired series of design decisions. All this for only £2.49? No wonder Parachute Panic HD has been an ever-present title on the Top Paid Apps chart on the Zune Marketplace since its release.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Full House Poker

26 March, 2011

Launched simultaneously with the Xbox LIVE Arcade version, Full House Poker on Windows Phone 7 is a frequently surprising package. Remarkably addictive despite not offering multiplayer gameplay, offering a comprehensive selection of game modes despite being priced reasonably and being presented as a partner to the Xbox 360 game of the same name, Full House Poker is a pleasantly robust videogame package that pushes forward the connection between Microsoft’s two leading gaming platforms.
