Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Kid Icarus: Uprising

15 April, 2012
By

Originally unveiled alongside the Nintendo 3DS system itself, Kid Icarus: Uprising has been a long time coming. The rebirth of a long dormant series is not something which a publisher like Nintendo takes lightly, even more so when it’s one of the most prominent titles in the line-up for a new piece of hardware. But with Masahiro Sakurai, the designer responsible for the Super Smash Bros. series, at the helm, Nintendo were right to allow the team to achieve their goals.

Electronic Theatre ImageFor many years in the 1990’s gamers the world over cried out for a videogame featuring their two favourite mascots, Mario and Sonic. It wouldn’t be til nearly twenty years later that SEGA and Nintendo would reveal that all-important hand shake had taken place, and even then the resulting product was something that very few has expected. However, once the announcement had been made it was easy to predict that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games would be a huge success, enough to ensure that it was more than just a one-off.

Originally scheduled for autumn last year, SEGA announced a delay in the launch of Crush3D back in July without offering any reason as to why they chose to postpone the release. For any keen observer of the videogames industry however, it was easy to see that it was a simple marketing decision: avoiding the big names of the winter line-up and arriving early after the busy holiday season to take advantage of the increased userbase of the most popular console of the moment. However, as a new intellectual property (IP) taking on board the unique features of its host system, Crush3D is a title that deserves to be recognised for its creativity more than most, regardless of when the publisher chooses to let us get our hands on it.

SEGA’s Shinobi series has had a turbulent time since the 16-bit era. While Shinobi Legions for the Saturn was criticised for failing to advance the series, while the intended reboot of the franchise on PlayStation 2 – under the guise of two titles: Shinobi and Nightshade – slipped by largely unnoticed by the mainstream gaming audience. With the advent of the Nintendo 3DS however, SEGA have the opportunity to capitalise on a new market as yet to receive any similarly themed products. And it’s a market that is largely populated by gamers that would have experienced the original home console Shinobi titles firsthand.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Horrid Henry: The Good, The Bad & The Bugly

23 December, 2011
By

Electronic Theatre ImageAn unexpected winter release, Horrid Henry: The Good, The Bad & The Bugly is available now as a Nintendo 3DS exclusive. It’s a strange franchise to develop for the newest console on the market, but one that that publishers Europress, a division of Koch Media, obviously have a lot of confidence in. After the success of the Nintendo DS title last year and the motion-picture release this summer, there would surely be few who would blame them.

16 December, 2011

Electronic Theatre ImageFrom its humble beginnings as a freeware PC title back released back in 2004, Cave Story has grown dramatically in terms of both audience and appreciation. Wearing its adventure videogame inspiration on its sleeve, for many Cave Story is considered an equal to the genre instigators, Metroid and CastleVania. And rightfully so, as Cave Story has proven it’s worth as a downloadable title on Wii and Nintendo DS, and now finally arrives at retail on Nintendo 3DS under the guise of Cave Story 3D.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Steel Diver

The launch window software for the Nintendo 3DS console has been fairly hit-and-miss. Titles such as Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, Dead or Alive: Dimensions and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D have brought the familiar home console experience to the handheld system, very few games have managed to utilise the unique features of the Nintendo 3DS in any meaningful way. There is plenty of hope however, and as a first-party title Steel Diver is an oddity that comes close to filling that gap.

It seems to be becoming something of a tradition for Namco Bandai Games to deliver a Ridge Racer titles within the launch window of a new console. Everything from the PlayStation to the Xbox 360, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) to the original Nintendo DS has received it’s own unique vision of the classic arcade racing game, and so it comes as no surprise that there’s another instalment for the Nintendo 3DS already. Ridge Racer 3D operates within one of the most popular videogame genres, but on the Nintendo 3DS it’s also one of the most contested.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Dead or Alive: Dimensions

The Nintendo 3DS is a console screaming desperately for a ‘killer app’. The launch line-up offered some good gameplay experiences most certainly, and the recently released The Legends of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is undoubtedly the jewel in the console’s crown at present, but failing to provide anything truly unique is its biggest downfall. The game which comes closet to filling that void right now is surprisingly not one that’s completely original simply an existing genre experience adapted to make use of the Nintendo 3DS console’s unique capabilities: Dead or Alive: Dimensions.
