Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Disney/Pixar Cars 2

24 December, 2011

Electronic Theatre ImageHaving released on multiple formats throughout this winter, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) version of the Disney/Pixar Cars 2 videogame is decidedly different to that of other consoles. Aside from the iOS releases, the PSP console is arguably the least powerful system to receive an edition of the movie tie-in, and as such has been subject to a separate development at Virtual Toys. However, despite the sole attention being aimed directly at the PSP release, it doesn’t seem as though Disney/Pixar Cars 2 has benefited from it.

With the PlayStation Vita well and truly on it’s way, it could be easy to suggest the original PlayStation Portable (PSP) console is now official past it’s prime. Any software released from this point on is likely to be considered one of two things by the gaming community in future:  one of the late underappreciated highlights of the console’s software library, or a throwaway budget title trying to make a quick buck in an open market. The truth is nothing’s so black-and-white of course, and with PQube’s latest release, that most certainly is the case.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Tehra: Dark Warrior

Developed by the European StormBASIC, a team specialising in small budget portable titles, Tehra: Dark Warrior is available now on the PlayStation Store as a PSP Mini title for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable (PSP). A reasonably priced game that is concerned with nothing more than action, Tehra: Dark Warrior likes everything to be big; big weapons, big enemies and big appendages on its female characters. Tehra: Dark Warrior is a hark back to the teenage-orientated action games of the early 90’s, delivered within a very modern package.

And here on the portable system, the quick fix of creation is all the more impressive.

While there’s no denying that the PlayStation Portable (PSP) is suffering from somewhat of a software drought when compared to the ever increasing competition, there are still a number of titles arriving on the format demonstrating a passionate understanding of the system’s unique qualities. Tecmo Koei Europe’s recent Undead Knights offered gamers an absorbing Action-Puzzle game, while Capcom and SEGA’s Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star episodes last year made exemplary use of the PSP’s storage and online capabilities. However, of the few publishers still supporting the format with retail releases, Rising Star Games have perhaps one of the most intriguing of all the system’s remaining releases on their hands.

The Dead or Alive series makes it’s debut on Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) today, in it’s most unexpected form. While many may have been craving a handheld adaptation of the balanced fantasy Beat-‘Em-Up, Tecmo Koei has decided to take a more unusual route, progressing the Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball spin-off series with this, Dead or Alive: Paradise.

Tecmo Koei is well known for it’s support of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) format. A number of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors titles have made their way to the handheld console, both Warriors Orochi outings have received a conversion and even Gitaroo Man has graced the system. Further to this, the Dead or Alive series is set to make it’s debut on the format in the very near future, but all of these titles are based upon franchises which have previously found success on other consoles. Undead Knights is an entirely original intellectual property (IP) built from the ground-up for the PSP, and it very much shows.

Electronic Theatre Image            The latest Phantasy Star title has arrived in Europe in the form of a handheld release, the highly-anticipated Phantasy Star Portable exclusively on PlayStation Portable (PSP). As the first title in the series developed from the ground-up for a handheld console, eyes are on Phantasy Star Portable for a cue as to the future of the series, and the possibilities that lie within the even greater opportunities presented in Phantasy Star Zero, coming to Nintendo DS later this year.

The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga

19 March, 2009
By

Electronic Theatre Image            The latest in SNK Playmore’s typically generous offerings through Ignition Entertainment, The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga, is due to launch on PlayStation Portable and Wii on March 28th across Europe. The plentiful compilation contains five complete titles from The King of Fighters franchise: The King of Fighters ’94, The King of Fighters ’95, The King of Fighters ’96, The King of Fighters ’97 and The King of Fighters ’98: Dream Match Never Ends. That’s a lot of fighting on one disc, but The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga faces an unusually large amount of competition in the Beat-‘Em-Up genre at present.
