Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi

10 November, 2011
By

Electronic Theatre ImageNamco Bandai Games’ Dragon Ball Z videogames have had a bit of a rough ride on the current-generation consoles. While the PlayStation 2 editions of the franchise were considering groundbreaking beat-‘em-up titles by many, the revival of the franchise lead by Capcom’s Street Fighter IV hasn’t done the series any favours in terms of public perception. Whereas Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi renovated the genre with a number of unique ideas and true innovation, Street Fighter IV’s insistence that much of this wasn’t necessary had the crowds believing that subsequent Dragon Ball Z titles had become over bloated affairs suitable for the core fanbase only.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster

7 November, 2011
By

Electronic Theatre ImageComing from the widely respected development studio responsible for the likes of Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster is a curious production. Removed from the studios’ typical core demographic, This Xbox 360 Kinect exclusive title is deigned to be enjoyed by the whole family, and in that respect it’s wholly successful.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Kinect Sports: Season Two

25 October, 2011
By

Electronic Theatre ImageAlong with the recent release of Dance Central 2, Kinect Sports: Season Two arguably stands up as one of the most important releases for the Xbox 360’s Kinect in the forthcoming busy retail season. The sequel to one of the most popular titles available for Microsoft Studios’ full-body motion-control peripheral, it’s the job of Kinect Sports: Season Two to prove to the masses that which Rise of Nightmares has already done for the core demographic: that things have progressed, and Kinect is now just as viable a living room proposition as the controller-based family entertainment videogame systems.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

12 October, 2011
By

Namco Bandai Games Europe’s autumn line-up is well pitched to fill a few gaps in the market. The recently released Dark Souls proves that there is still room for challenging videogames, and the forthcoming Naruto and Dragonball Z titles promise to deliver this year’s anime fix for fans of their respective series. This week’s release of Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has its own agenda however: to become the leading flight combat videogame on the current-generation systems.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Rugby World Cup 2011

7 October, 2011
By

With the ongoing Rugby World Cup in New Zealand placing England as one of the tournaments’ strongest competitors, the potential for videogame adaptations of the sport is greater now than ever before. Many videogames have tried on previous generations of hardware, but few have really grabbed the audience in the same way that Rugby World Cup 2011 could well do now, with the installed console base greater than ever before, and interest in the sport considered to be at it’s highest in decades.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: RAGE

7 October, 2011
By

Originally unveiled in 2007, id Software’s RAGE has a lot to live up to. It’s not just the latest videogame from the world famous studio, it’s not just the latest first-person shooter (FPS) from the grandfather of FPS games, and it’s not just the first title to be published by Bethesda Softworks since parent company Zenimax Media’s purchase of id Software. According to the team behind the game, it’s the first title in a brand new franchise; to be considered equal to the legacies of DOOM and QUAKE, RAGE will have to go quite a distance beyond modern expectations of FPS videogames.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Dark Souls

3 October, 2011
By

Set to launch throughout North America and Europe this week, FromSoftware’s Dark Souls is about to become that game on everyone’s lips. It’s difficult, but never unfair. It’s punishing, but never does it make excuses for being that way. Above all else, it’s a videogame that tries to rewrite the rulebook on what it means to be a ‘core’ gamer, and for the most part it succeeds.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: F1 2011

29 September, 2011

Codemasters’ racing games are arguably their strongest properties at present, and have been for some years. As meticulous as Operation Flashpoint is there will always be some who don’t get on with it’s passion for realism, and interesting a premise as Bodycount was, it was perhaps inevitable that many would frown upon it’s unwillingness to follow current trends. DiRT however, seems as though it can do almost no wrong.

Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Championship Jockey: G1 Jockey and Gallop Racer

18 September, 2011
By

The latest release from Tecmo Koei Europe throws quite a contrast to their previous releases on the current-generation consoles. Prolific purveyors of the 3D scrolling beat-‘em-up games, Tecmo Koei Europe are responsible for a great deal of the combat-action games currently available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Nintendo 3DS, and with Dynasty Warriors Next and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, the team are already gearing-up to take the same ground with the next generation of consoles. With that, to suggest that Championship Jockey: G1 Jockey and Gallop Racer is a step aside for the publisher wouldn’t be too unreasonable a statement. However, it’s certainly not a bad step to have taken.
