Now approaching its summer release, Namco Bandai Games’ Inversion is heading straight into a heavily competitive genre. While third-person action videogames come in all shapes and sizes, there are very few that manage to compete on the same level as the current-generation’s defining offering, Gears of War. Having rewritten the rulebook for the high-definition era, Epic Games’ Xbox 360 lovechild is still sitting pretty at the top of the genre pile, but while Inversion gleefully borrows from the pioneering series it also has a few ideas of its own.

The official reveal of the long-rumoured Call of Duty: Black Ops II may not have gone according to plan for Activision, with leaks on both sides of the Atlantic leaving little to be seen when the preordained time came, but you’d still be foolish to bet against it being another groundbreaking success for one of the world’s most successful franchises. The fact that such leaks were championed by global media organisations proves just how much weight Call of Duty still carries, and just how important to the videogame industry Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be.

In modern times it seems that, in order to succeed, racing videogames need to be either stylish new revisions of the genre or all encompassing products. If you’re not in adrenaline pumping chases or aiming for strict realism, cross country sprints or on the home straight of global championship featuring the best competitors in the world, it can appear as though the only place you’ll end up is in the bargain bin. Style or simulation: whatever happened to just being good?
