Microsoft made an appearance at last month’s London MCM Expo for the first time, having obviously heard of the show’s growing reputation in videogaming communities. With their entire booth dedicated to just one game, Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 received quite an outing, in high demand throughout the show’s opening times.

The upcoming release of F.E.A.R. 3 has a great number of gamers waiting in anticipation, and not just those who are fans of the hit-and-miss series. There was always a reason to love F.E.A.R., even if it’s gunplay design didn’t always live up to it’ promise. Its premise may still be a supernatural horror First-Person Shooter (FPS), but the gameplay features it proposes are very enticing.

Electronic Theatre Preview: Child of Eden

11 May, 2011
By

Set for release this summer, Ubisoft’s Child of Eden will be available first on Xbox 360 followed by a PlayStation 3 release some months later. There’s been a great deal of speculation as to why this is, from being due to the decision to implement stereoscopic 3D technology into the PlayStation 3 version to the team behind the game dedicating more resources to the Xbox 360 version to get it just right, on time. Based on the build shown to Electronic Theatre, we’re edging towards the later right now.

Electronic Theatre Preview: DiRT 3 [Multiplayer Mode]

The DiRT games have taken multiplayer modes in their stride thus far, perfectly adapting their single-player strengths to the online circuit in a way that so few games can achieve. DiRT 3 is aiming to take this one stage further, not only bringing the most familiar aspects of it’s high-speed action into the human competition arena, but also intending to mix-up the formula significantly with some all-new gameplay modes.

The forthcoming release of DiRT 3 brings a number of new additions to the series, most notably the Gymkhana mode. Inspired by Ken Block’s Youtube antics, the all-new gameplay mode offers player the opportunity to do that which many have always wanted: thrash around a purpose built course and be rewarded for pulling off an impressive series of tricks and stunts. The freedom to push their vehicle to the limit is right there before them, and few players will be disappointed with the possibilities.

Electronic Theatre Preview: Duke Nukem Forever

Following Electronic Theatre’s previous report on the opening section of Duke Nukem Forever, today we take a look at the second stage available in the preview build, known as ‘Highway Battle: Part 2’, and some brand new content, which was reportedly available to play outside of 2K Games and Gearbox Software for the very first time. Putting the peddle to the metal, totting some big guns and kicking large amounts of ass, Duke Nukem Forever shows that there’s more to First-Person Shooter (FPS) gaming than space marines and war heroes.

The long-awaited release of Duke Nukem Forever is creeping ever-closer, and 2K Games are very keen to show it off at every available opportunity. Making a splash at the recent Gadget Show Live at Birmingham’s NEC, Duke Nukem Forever was playable on dozens of demo pods, along with a couple of only-just-appropriately dressed ‘babes’ and a life-size statue of the man himself. Not content with being the star of the 18+ Game Zone at the show however, 2K Games offered gamers the chance to get hands-on with some all-new content not seen previously in public.

Electronic Theatre Preview: DiRT 3 [Career Mode]

At a recent DiRT 3 event at Battersea Power Station in London, Electronic Theatre got the chance to play a snippet of the game’s brand new single-player game modes. The Career mode has evolved from that of the game’s predecessors, and has a much stronger focus on the professional rally scene: over half of the game is based on a drivers professional rally career. With nearly sixty more tracks than Colin McRae DiRT 2, the return of snow as a road surface and improved weather conditions, DiRT 3 looks like a real return the classic rally experience.

Electronic Theatre Preview: Red Faction: Armageddon

It could be argued that Red Faction: Guerrilla’s online gameplay was underrepresented when it launched. It seems apparent that the PC version of the game offered the strongest community, with the console audiences decreasingly rapidly after just a few months, but even then it could be very difficult to find a match out of the peak hours. It seems that, as with most other aspects of Red Faction: Armageddon, Volition has made note of this situation, and decided not to pursue the least popular aspects of its predecessors, so instead of a competitive multilayer experience, we have a co-operative one.

Electronic Theatre Preview: Portal 2

Set for release later this month, Portal 2 has been heralded by many as one of Valve’s greatest achievements before the finished article has even arrived. Judging by that which was on offer in the original Portal as part of the incredibly generous The Orange Box compendium, and later expanded for the Xbox LIVE Arcade and Steam as Portal: Still Alive, Portal 2 is undoubtedly a welcome addition to the market, and given Valve’s past works as a barometer for experimentation within the established formula, Portal 2 is unlikely to be anything short of spectacular.
