Legendo Entertainment today contemplates whether the world is flat or – as some controversial scientists would lead us to believe – round, as it sets sail on the high seas with Fortune Winds: Ancient Trader. A turn-based strategy game inspired by nautical folklore, Fortune Winds: Ancient Trader is now available for Mac users around the globe on the Mac App Store, with a PC version is planned for release later in 2012. The successor to indie cult-hit Ancient Trader, Fortune Winds: Ancient Trader introduces all of the gameplay and features of the original and embellishes the experience with improved AI, additional player avatars and save game functionality. During the player’s turn they must manage multiple aspects, from upgrading your ship to trading as you sail through unknown waters where no ship has gone before. Compete with rival traders and battle mythical sea-monsters as you seek out and acquire navigational artefacts to reveal and defeat the legendary Kraken. Fortune Winds: Ancient Trader also features a “Hotseat: Player Vs Player” mode, where up to four players take turns as they bid to rule the seas. Available from today, Fortune Winds: Ancient Trader is priced at USD 9.99/EUR 7.99 on the Mac App [...]

Kalypso Media and Novacore Studios have announced new gameplay details for Legends of Pegasus, their upcoming 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate) space strategy title. In Legends of Pegasus, players will command the last remnants of the Human race as they explore space in a quest to colonize new worlds, expand the human empire and defend themselves from (or exterminate) alien aggressors. In 2231, humanity discovered a new power source which opened the way to the stars. Humanity built huge spaceships, colonized distant worlds and terraforming others in order to create habitable planets. This was a time of great enlightenment for humanity: while exploring deep space, mankind was united for the first time in its history. But, as is always the case with man, his warlike nature got the upper hand. The winds of freedom led colonies to rebel against the government ruling from faraway Earth. Humanity was on the brink of utter chaos and the government was on the edge of collapse. When all seemed hopeless, a seemingly friendly alien race appeared. These aliens shared their technological knowledge with us and brought the civil war to an end. While doubtful at first, Mankind finally accepted this alliance with these [...]

Launching today as a PlayStation Minis (PS Minis) title, Velocity is a scrolling shoot-‘em-up with a difference. While the screenshots may tell you that you’ll fight patterns of enemies in formation and travel through a retro styled science-fiction setting, they hide a number of more innovative mechanics. Velocity may be set to be delivered as a diminutive downloadable package, but there’s nothing small about its ideas. Developed by UK studio FuturLab, Velocity is exactly the kind of videogame the PS Minis channel was designed for. As a modern interpretation of retro styled videogame in a retro flavoured genre, Velocity doesn’t do itself any favours next to Call of Duty or the recently released Prototype 2, but it’s not meant to compete against such huge names. It’s a videogame designed as a snack between franchise meals, a five minute blast-a-thon in which using your head is just as important as using your hands. Velocity does benefit from that all-important ‘one-more-go’ factor too, meaning that the included seventy levels are a blessing. Progressing through the campaign is a relative breeze, but only as the videogame is designed to allow you room to experiment with each new feature before throwing more challenging designs [...]

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) recently launched the long awaited Starhawk, a PlayStation 3 exclusive online multiplayer videogame. The successor to the critically acclaimed Warhawk, Starhawk is a fast paced third-person shooter set in the far reaches of space where peace is a word far to few people have heard of. Starhawk gives players destructive powers to use throughout each online match, from airstrikes to defensive structures. A large variety of powerful and deadly weaponry is ready to aid players as they battle a band of merciless enemies on the ground, in vehicles and in the air. Starhawk will introduce the innovative ‘Build and Battle’ system which will allow players to dynamically change the battlefield with options to deploy structures, weapons or vehicles right in front of you in real time when you need them. In addition to the online gameplay, Starhawk also features a single-player mode in which players take on the role of a legendary gunslinger, Emmett Graves. After an assault on your Rift mining plantation leaves you and your brother in a rather sorry state, a sibling rivalry emerges that will take its toll on colonies far-and-wide. In addition to these gameplay modes however, a co-operative gameplay [...]

This week’s Xbox LIVE enabled Windows Phone 7 release is the sequel to last year’s popular geoDefense, known as geoDefense Swarm. A tower defence title much like its predecessor, geoDefense Swarm mixes things up by removing the predetermined paths on which enemies travel. While geoDefense followed the typical design of having paths which the enemies would travel along in the hope of reaching your base, geoDefense Swarm instead offers them the opportunity to roam freely, finding the quickest route to your base. The player can place their turrets on any hexagonal space, and as such create roadblocks which the enemies can not pass over, but instead must find a way around. Eventually players will be able to build hugely complex paths that are almost impossible to escape. Available to download now from the Zune Marketplace, geoDefense Swarm is priced at £2.29 GBP. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest Xbox LIVE enabled titles made available on Windows Phone 7. -END-

Deep Silver and Piranha Bytes have released the final episode of the ‘making of’ series for the recently released videogame Risen 2: Dark Waters. Available now for PC, Risen 2: Dark Waters will also launch soon on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In this new video, the developers from Piranha Bytes elaborate on how they approached the creation of a videogame by first designing the world and the reasons why inhabitants live in certain locations as a basis to create believable storylines and quests. They talk about how the NPCs react to players choices in dialogues and how the 150.000 spoken words craft the personalization of the videogame, and why they decided to change the character development in contrast to the first Risen. Finally, the team discuss why they believe that a hero with a fixed history allows for better and deeper storytelling than a custom character created from scratch. -END-

Now approaching its summer release, Namco Bandai Games’ Inversion is heading straight into a heavily competitive genre. While third-person action videogames come in all shapes and sizes, there are very few that manage to compete on the same level as the current-generation’s defining offering, Gears of War. Having rewritten the rulebook for the high-definition era, Epic Games’ Xbox 360 lovechild is still sitting pretty at the top of the genre pile, but while Inversion gleefully borrows from the pioneering series it also has a few ideas of its own. The innovation of Inversion lies mostly in that of the structure of its multiplayer modes.
Following the official announcement of Saints Row: The Third – Enter The Dominatrix earlier this month, new story details for the forthcoming standalone package have been revealed. Contrary to popular belief, Saints Row: The Third – Enter The Dominatrix will be a retail product, and will be available for on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Once a simple street gang from Stilwater, the Saints have evolved into a global empire, replete with bombastic TV advertising and tasteful consumer products, the kind of TV advertising and consumer products that would give any alien warlord pause. Clearly, the Saints are the biggest badasses on Earth. Now, in order to prepare his forces for domination, Zinyak captures the leader of the Saints and imprisons him in an elaborate virtual reality simulation. This simulation program looks and feels like Steelport, but it is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. Here, you are a slave. Welcome… to the Dominatrix. Saints Row: The Third – Enter The Dominatrix is set for release this summer, with further details likely to trickle along the grapevine over the next few weeks. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest [...]

Electronic Arts Inc. today unveiled five new mechanics that will bring changes to EA SPORTS’ FIFA 13, promising the largest and deepest feature set in the history of the franchise. Ranging from new artificial intelligence (AI) design to a redesigned dribbling system, EA SPORTS are pulling out all the stops for FIFA 13. “We are perfecting the best sports game in the world with innovations that capture all the drama and unpredictability of real-world football,” said David Rutter, Executive Producer for FIFA 13. “These are game-changing innovations that will revolutionize our artificial intelligence, dribbling, ball control and collisions to create a true battle for possession across the entire pitch, and deliver freedom and creativity in attack.” The most sophisticated AI ever achieved for the FIFA franchise will drive FIFA 13 on high-definition (HD) consoles and PC. All-new Attacking Intelligence enables players to analyse space, work harder and smarter to break down defences, and think two plays ahead. Players now possess the intelligence to create, curve, or alter runs to capitalize on openings as they occur, make runs that pull defenders out of position to open passing channels for teammates, and better position themselves for new attacking opportunities. In FIFA 13 [...]

Jason Holtman, director of business development for Valve, makers of Steam and game titles, is confirmed as the opening keynote for the Evolve conference at this summer’s Develop in Brighton. Jason’s keynote – Everyone’s Business is Business – looks at how organisations can lay the foundation for better business decisions and better products by fostering a system in which traditional business functions are not artificially separated from the individuals who develop content and features. Holtman explained, “Working in a flat, no-management structure means that everyone at Valve drives business, press-relations and marketing decisions in everything Valve does. This keynote will describe and discuss how many of those decisions were made for various Valve products (such as Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2), Steam features (such as Workshop), and third party games on Steam.” Andy Lane, managing director of organiser Tandem Events commented, “We’re delighted that Jason is opening Evolve this year, the first of more than one hundred sessions taking place over the three day event, which always proves to be highly informative and a lot of fun.” Develop in Brighton runs from July 10th-12th at the city’s Hilton Metropole Hotel.
It’s been widely reported that the pre-order figures for the forthcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II are reaching staggering heights, having surpassed the original Call of Duty: Black Ops within the first twenty four hours after the official reveal of the videogame. However, it was never going to stop there, and today a UK retailer has revealed an aggressive move to secure more interest in the title. Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has always been an aggressive competitor in the Call of Duty market, famously offering the videogames for hugely discounted prices on their launch day in order to attract customers through their doors. Today however, the publisher has revealed a promotion that doesn’t demand players visit their local Sainsbury’s store, nor even leave their own house. Simply order online, and you can save 20% off the typical retail price. Sainsbury’s have been offering a reasonable price since the official pre-order campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops II launched, but from today gamers who enter the voucher code ‘SEGAMES1’ at the checkout will have the price reduced by a further 20%, bringing the console price down from £44.99 GBP to just £35.99, and the PC version from £34.99 to £27.99.
