There’s a lot of rumours circulating today regarding efforts to block pre-owned games on next-gen consoles. The latest is Microsoft’s ‘always online’ program. I’m not sure I would believe these rumours, but nonetheless is raises an interesting question.

What are your feelings about a console without pre-owned games?

How many people share/borrow videogames with/from other people? How is this going to affect your gaming experience?

    That’s a great point l.m.h., I hadn’t even thought of that.

It wouldn’t just prevent pre-owned it would restrict all forms of sharing. It’s similar to Steam I guess, but a retail product is inherently more open.

I think this will affect a lot of people who don’t necessarily buy each and every title they want to play but mutually share videogames around. I know a lot of people who do this.

Well apparently Sony have developed the tech to do it, but haven’t included it in PS4. The rumours started with MS so we’ll still have to wait and see what they do…

I buy and trade-in a lot of pre-owned games. Some people just don’t want to pay full price for every single game.

Hopefully Microsoft won’t opt for it.

Rumours are still circulating that the Xbox 720 games will have per console activation codes :(

The current rumour today is that the first time you stick the game in your console it will install and the disc will effectively be worthless. This could mean that when you reach your hard drive’s capacity you need to delete the game and lose it forever. Let’s hope Microsoft reveal the solution to this soon.

This is tainting my excitement for the Xbox 720 :(
