The forthcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade conversion of the Nintendo 64 classic Perfect Dark is one of the most highly-anticipated releases Microsoft’s digital distribution service has ever seen. Originally released in 2000, Joanna Dark’s first adventure is set to receive a tenth anniversary celebration in the form of a high-definition (HD) update, and today Electronic Theatre has received word of the release date and pricing strategy for the title.
Developed by 4J Studios, the team responsible for the PlayStation 3 conversions of Bethesda Softworks’ Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Codemasters’ Overlord: Raising Hell as well as the previous Xbox LIVE Arcade releases of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Perfect Dark for Xbox LIVE Arcade will not only sport updated HD visuals, but also offer co-operative gameplay for two players and online multiplayer for up to four players. Further to this, it has been suggested that the game will incorporate the much lamented face-mapping feature that was removed from the original Nintendo 64 release, though this is yet to be confirmed.
With anticipation for the title riding high, Electronic Theatre has endeavoured to secure details concerning the expected release date and pricing strategy for this new rendition of RARE’s classic First-Person Shooter (FPS). Today, we received comment on the forthcoming release from a marketing representative intimately involved with the Xbox LIVE network.
“The work is pretty much finished… as far as I’m aware, the conversion has been complete for some time now.” He stated, before continuing; “We’re expecting a release very soon, there’s been talk that the game would launch in either the last week of January or beginning of February.”
With Xbox LIVE Arcade releases typically arriving on Wednesdays, Electronic Theatre proposed the dates of January 27th or February 4th 2010. In response, we were told that these expectations were “logical”.
“Logic would suggest that it’s safe to assume that would probably be the case, though of course with such a high profile title all parties involved would like to ensure the release doesn’t clash with any other big games.”
When addressing the issue of price, Electronic Theatre’s enquiries were met with a rather flat response.
“1200 [Microsoft Points]. I thought that would have been obvious by now.”
RARE themselves had previously confirmed an “early 2010” release date, and has reaffirmed this on numerous occasions via their Twitter account. No official announcement concerning a release date or price are currently available, though we expect such confirmation from Microsoft or RARE to be announced very shortly. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Perfect Dark, including a look back at the original Nintendo 64 release coming very soon.
-END-
UPDATE: Since reporting this story, there has been many reports from other media agencies suggesting this news to be inaccurate. Electronic Theatre would like to reiterate that this article does not aim to propose a specific release date, but rather a "release strategy" for the forthcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade conversion of Perfect Dark. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated as this story develops.
