The Call of Duty is currently the biggest franchise in the videogames industry is undeniable. Breaking records with every successive launch, be it retail packaged products or downloadable content (DLC) adding to the annual release, after decades of trying Activision have finally found an annual cash cow superior to any Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk’s. And while it may attempt to recreate the ‘thrill’ of war in an accessible yet po-faced manner, it appears that developers of the latest instalment, Treyarch, aren’t without the ability to mock their own creation, and Activision seemingly are willing to let them do so.

The latest trailer series began last week to mark the launch of the latest DLC pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, known as First Strike, on PlayStation 3. A teaser trailer set in Berlin kicked things off in a somewhat unusual fashion, but nonetheless retained some sense of reality towards Call of Duty: Black Ops – First Strike’s setting. An expanded version was later delivered however, removing all sensibilities relating to one of the biggest political events of the late twentieth century.

Will this be a turning point for the Call of Duty franchise? No more so that that of adding a Zombie Mode, Electronic Theatre predicts, but regardless it’s nice to see that a franchise so deeply buried in it’s lukewarm simulation roots isn’t set to take itself too seriously all the time. We may not see a ‘Big Head Mode’ or Call of Duty Karting for some time, but as long as Activision remain willing to put out these incredibly well designed, humorous trailers, Electronic Theatre will certainly be willing to forgive the odd but of unsightly gung-ho machismo elsewhere in the franchise.
