Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has confirmed today that the PlayStation 3 console has sold more than five million units in the UK since launch. Spurred on by the recent release of the new look 500GB console, the newly appointed UK Managing Director, Fergal Gara, has positioned the console for a buoyant fourth quarter.
The PlayStation 3 console originally launched in the UK back in 2007, more than a year after the Xbox 360 and several months after Nintendo’s Wii. Initially hamstrung by a high cost and challenging competition from rival systems, the PlayStation 3’s ten-year lifecycle has seen the console become much more affordable in the past few years, and with a number of different models now available the system is ready to be adopted by family audiences as well as more demanding videogame hobbyists.
This week sees the launch of a 12GB model, designed to encourage the family audience to migrate from their Wii console to the PlayStation 3. Given it’s partnering with the upcoming Wonderbook product; you’d be a fool to bet against the new redesign accomplishing its goals. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on the PlayStation 3 console and its sister format, the PlayStation Vita.
