Electronic Theatre ImageTim Burtons’ The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King shall be released for the Game Boy Advance in conjunction with games for the home consoles. The title appears to be aimed at younger players as it is a very straightforward 2D-platformer. It doesn’t appear to offer us anything new and could be used with any generic character.

In the level we were allowed to play you had to progress from left to right trying to find and destroyElectronic Theatre Image roots to help someone get out of a pumpkin. The storyline wasn’t disclosed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) but I’m sure we’ll learn more detail in due course – with the game presumably acting as either a prequel or sequel to the film. There is a map which is designed to help Jack Skellington and his faithful dog Zero along the way, but this is confusing at best, as are the stages you move around. Never quite sure of the exits, you could easily wander round confused for some time looking to where the level ends.

Graphically this pushes no boundaries and indeed there are games available for the Game Boy Advance which offer a lot more impressive visuals than this title. Even fans of Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas may be disappointed with this title in its current state.
