Available now for Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition, the Ver1.51 Mode is a downloadable content (DLC) package that offers a new variant of the standard videogame. It’s a simple adjustment of the basic ruleset that justifies its small price tag: just 80 Microsoft Points.

Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition – Ver1.51 Mode is realistically only going to be of interest to the most diehard shoot-‘em-up fans, but going by that same logic Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition itself isn’t exactly an entry level release for the genre. It’s DLC that does exactly what DLC is supposed to do: enhances the original videogame to expand its lifespan, if only for a short while, as the variations to Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition’s ruleset in this DLC are minimal.

The two main differences added to Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition by the Ver1.51 Mode DLC are the auto-bomb and level adjustments. The auto-bomb is now initiated on every player vehicle variant, saving your life at an intense interval when your attentions may be elsewhere. The most ardent shoot-‘em-up fans may argue that taking control of this most essential function away from the player is tantamount to a sin, but the player does retain manual control also. The level adjustments come in two forms, firstly that of balance and secondly in the arrangement of hidden extras.

The balancing act of a shoot-‘em-up is always a critical component: developers strive to create compelling high score environments without crushing the player under the weight of challenge, nor disenfranchising newcomers. Ver1.51 Mode renovates the arrangement of certain sequences throughout the videogame, but also increases the difficulty of the final boss battle considerably. The secret areas are also now somewhat easier to locate, with the player able to stumble upon them by accident rather than through a significant amount of trial-and-error.

As a lightweight addition to Dodonpachi Resurrection: Deluxe Edition, the Ver1.51 Mode DLC will be welcomed by fans, especially with its commendably low price tag. For gamers just beginning with shoot-‘em-up high score run gameplay it may seem as though little is achieved with Ver1.51 Mode, and that the variant offered can easily be ignored, but as is the key to the genre itself, the evidence of Ver1.51 Mode’s benefit is in the attention to detail.
